This setup is common in so many homes, the small, confined space, low, asymmetrical ceilings, and dim lighting make it feel uninviting. A common misconception is that light colors and bright furniture will make the space feel bigger, but my best advice for a space like this is to color drench the entire room! Paint the walls, ceilings, doors, trim, and built-ins the same color and watch how it transforms the space! Using a moody color to paint everything will not only make the space feel cozier, but it will also trick your eye into ignoring the soffit ceiling and draw you into the room. *DIY Tip* When painting the ceiling, use a flat sheen to avoid being able to see all the brush strokes!
I think that built-ins would totally transform this space, it gives you tons of storage, conceals your TV, and gives you tons of opportunity to add decorative elements like bookshelf board games, baskets for toys, and picture frames! I have a few tutorials on my website on how to DIY built-ins, I’ll link them below for you!
I would lean into a moody vibe with this basement, the dark paint color would pair well with rich textures like a leather sofa, wooden elements like the barn door and picture frames, and gold light fixtures. Adding a console table behind the sofa to accommodate extra seating would make this a great place to host guests. And adding boardgame-theme decor would really tie the space together!
