I feel like so many people have a basement like this where it’s a very big and spacious room but because of the windows and walkways, you’re not really sure how to place furniture to make it functional. Dividing the rooms into different zones will make it easier to design, so I made a seating area and a game zone. Now the room feels less overwhelming and more functional!
There are a few things I like about this space– the large windows with lots of natural light, the fireplace with built-ins are a great focal point, and the size of the room is perfect to create a cozy entertainment room that the entire family can enjoy!
I think color drenching a room like this helps give it that cozy, den feeling that you want in a movie room or game room. I chose Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore for this and painted all the walls, ceiling, and fireplace to give the room a cohesive feel. Then, to modernize the space I would paint the outdated 90s oak trim and baseboards white.
Because the walls are dark, I would pick light colored furniture to balance the space. This large white sectional is perfect for lots of seating and also makes dividing the room into different zones easier. Then I used light colored wood tones to add warmth to the space and play off of the existing built ins. Adding pouf ottomans in a multi-purpose room like this is nice because you can move them around for extra seating if needed.
With a few simple cosmetic changes, now this room feels like a cozy and inviting family room! Let me know what you think of this design in the comments on Instagram and follow along for weekly room transformations! You can shop the links for this space below or on my Amazon and LTK storefronts!
