Spruce My Space: How to Easily Upgrade Your Living Room

If you have an empty living room that has good bones, but you’re just not sure how to fill the space, follow these design tips to help you create a beautiful room that’s filled with character!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

When I received this photo submission, I was so excited! There’s so much potential in this space! The first thing I would address is the wall with the fireplace and windows. I notice that the beams, red brick, and ceiling fan, even though they’re all beautiful individually, when they’re right next to each other it’s making the space feel outdated. I would leave the beams exactly how they are, swap out the ceiling fan for something more modern, and do a german schmear on the fireplace to add some depth and texture.

The next thing I would change is the area rug. When you’re choosing an area rug for your space, you want the shape to mimic the shape of the room. The existing rug is very rectangular and elongated while the shape of the room is very square. So I would swap out the rug for something more square and much larger in size to really fill out the room.

I think the way that the couches are positioned works well with the flow of the room, you could also swap them out for a large sectional to fill up the room a little bit more. Since there is a lot of attention being drawn to the wall with the windows and fireplace, we want to balance that visual weight out on the other wall. To achieve that, I opted to paint the wall a moody green color and add an extra large media cabinet with some artwork above. I would also mount the TV up on the wall so that we’re filling that vertical space a little bit more.

Adding lots of texture and depth with different wood tones, gold accents, and various materials in the furniture really brings the space together and makes everything feel cohesive. After we’ve made all those changes, we can look at the room and the beams are the statement piece they were always intended to be and the living room looks like a cozy place to hang out as a family!
