Spruce My Space: Easy Ways to Update Your 90s Dining Room

post featured image

This dining room was stuck in the 90s, but with a few simple changes, we can bring it into the 21st century!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

Let’s start with this dining room. The overall space has great potential—wood floors, a large window, and charming architectural details like a chair rail. Our goal is to highlight these features and elevate the room to the next level.

The first thing I notice is the very yellow tone beige walls. That screams 90s to me, so I would opt to do a charming wallpaper or cooler tone paint. I love the chair railing detail, but the boxes also seem outdated so if this were my space I would opt to do a beadboard accent to go with the floral patterned wallpaper.

An area rug helps tie the room together, it brings a focal center to the space while also tying together all the colors throughout the room. The furniture in this space is very modern and contemporary style, which does not match the charming architectural details of the room. So I would put a warm wood dining table with light colored upholstered chairs on the ends and black chairs on the side with see-through backs. Having dining chairs without solid backs along the sides of the table allow us to tie in the black accent color without it feeling too heavy.

An easy, budget friendly way to update the space would be to replace the curtains. The sheer curtains with grommets look very cheap, but when you replace them with heavier textured pleated curtains, the space feels more luxurious. Amazon has a ton of great pleated curtains for less than $50!

Optional DIY

You could take this room one step further with a moody accent ceiling and crown moulding! While it’s completely optional, I feel like it just adds a layer of depth to the space and really makes it feel put together.
