From bold makeovers to subtle refreshes, these 5 design tips are your favs from Spruce My Space!

1. How to Make Your Small Living Room Feel Bigger

For this living room, I walked through my favorite ways to make a small living room feel bigger without sacrificing style or comfort. From painting walls and trim in contrasting shades to bring in depth, to layering rugs, curtains, and pillows for texture and color, every detail can shift the feel of a tight space. I also shared a DIY fireplace option for this space as a different option instead of a console table. With a few thoughtful tweaks—and some DIY projects—your small living room can look and feel much larger. Tap here to read more about this design and to shop the space!

2. How to Update Your 90s Foyer

In this design, I walked you through simple, high-impact ways to refresh a 90s foyer without ripping out the flooring. First up: neutralize that orange oak by painting the walls a cool tone and swapping out warm bulbs for daylight LED ones — the change in light will tone down that orange immediately. I also recommend updating basic elements like your entry table, light fixtures, and wall art, layering in texture with a large rug, and adding subtle wallpaper to bring in character without overloading the space. Lastly, I show you how a beginner DIY, like installing picture moulding, especially along the staircase wall, can elevate the whole room and make it feel more custom. 3. How to Update Your Kitchen Without Changing the Cabinets or Counters

In the makeover, I share clever ways to refresh a kitchen without replacing cabinets or counters—so you get big impact without big expense. I walk through two options: Option 1 is to lean into the existing cabinets, keeping them and brightening the rest (think lighter backsplash, swap out the hood vent for black or contrast pieces, and introduce warm metallics). Option 2 is to keep your countertops and instead paint the cabinets, swap in black hardware and accents, use peel-and-stick backsplash if needed, and tie in your flooring or other elements to make everything feel cohesive. Both paths make your kitchen feel updated without doing a full renovation. Tap here to read more about this design and to shop the space!

4. Two-Story Living Room Design Tips

In this Spruce My Space segment, I dive into how to pull off a modern-organic look in a two-story living room that feels balanced, warm, and intentional. I cover how using tall, wide curtains, vertical art or mirrors, and a statement light fixture help draw the eye upward and unify the space so it doesn’t feel visually divided. I also recommend swapping in a warmer wood console to echo the sofas, swapping out bulky TV elements for something sleeker like a Frame TV, and adding decor to the mantel that fills that vertical space. All together, these tweaks take what’s already good and make it feel cozier and more cohesive—especially in rooms with tall ceilings. Tap here to read the full blog.

5. Defining a Dining Room

In this post, I show how you can make a dining space in an open-concept home feel intentional, warm, and distinct — even when it shares walls with your foyer or living room. I suggest swapping the accent wall for a bold patterned wallpaper to pull together the color palette and bring more life. An area rug helps define the dining area, while wooden furniture and upholstered chairs soften the cool tones from floors and walls. I’d also replace the light fixture, put up a picture gallery on the back wall, and add greenery in a tall corner vase or faux tree for texture and dimension. These updates give the space personality without knocking down walls. Tap here to read more about this design and shop the space!
