Large living rooms can be tough to cozy up—especially if you’re working with a neutral color palette. But with a few simple tricks, you can make the space feel warm, inviting, and perfectly pulled together.

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

The first thing that stands out to me in this room is that it’s really calling for a big sectional sofa. Right now, there’s too much individual furniture, which makes the layout feel scattered and disconnected. A large L-shaped sectional would instantly ground the space, pull everything together, and still provide plenty of seating.

For the fireplace, I see why you chose taller artwork, but I’d recommend something a bit shorter—aligned with the ceiling height in the corners of the room. Pairing that adjustment with raising the curtain rod higher will visually lower the ceiling, which makes the space feel much cozier.

I’d also suggest removing the ceiling fan above the TV. It throws the room off balance. Replacing the ceiling fan in the center of the room with a larger fan with wooden blades creates a stronger focal point. The wood tones will warm up the space, complement the dark floors, and tie in beautifully with the fireplace mantel.

Right now, the fireplace is the main focal point, but I’d love to bring more balance to the TV wall. Adding framed artwork and sconces on either side of the TV would help. A large wooden console beneath it would also spread warmth and make the whole room feel more cohesive. If a new console isn’t in the budget, you can easily DIY the look—check out my faux Pottery Barn finish tutorial linked below.

Finally, layering in a variety of wood tones is key when working with neutrals. Notice how even though the walls, curtains, fireplace, and sectional are all beige or white, the room still feels warm and inviting. That’s because we incorporated depth through the brown poufs, woven baskets, leather ottoman, console table, and wooden ceiling fan. Those touches of natural texture are what make a neutral space feel alive and cozy.
