There’s a lot going on in this dining room—the rugs, curtains, table and chairs don’t quite coordinate. I’m going to show you how you can mix patterns and textures, without making the room feel chaotic!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

The first thing that stands out in this room isn’t just the mismatched dining chairs, but the mix of styles competing with each other. The table, chairs, and light fixture feel sleek and modern, while the colorful rug and curtains lean contemporary, and the wall art gives off farmhouse vibes. To transform this space, the best place to start is by narrowing in on a clear design style and staying consistent.

The wall behind the table feels a bit blank, so I added wallpaper and a half-wall accent to bring in more texture and depth. I chose Poppy Honeysuckle in Navy from my Wall Blush collection and paired it with a color-drenched ceiling in Sherwin Williams Still Water. Painting the fifth wall (your ceiling!) instantly makes the room feel cozier and more intentional.

For the furniture, I leaned into the room’s natural features. The dining table is a rich wooden tone that ties back to the flooring. Mismatched chairs can absolutely work, but for a more polished look, I placed the upholstered chairs at the ends of the table so they don’t block sightlines. Since the walls are moody, I balanced them with light, neutral fabrics for the chairs, rug, and curtains to keep the space airy.

Gold light fixtures add warmth against the cooler moody tones, and choosing ones with white shades instead of bare bulbs makes the lighting softer and cozier. Because the wallpaper pattern already makes a statement, I kept the wall décor simple with a round mirror and matching sconces. Finally, no room feels complete without greenery—plants pull all the elements together and add life to the space!
