Spruce My Space: How to Easily Update 90s Foyer

The orange floor color and stair banister are a staple of the 90s- early 2000s. Follow these simple design tips to neutralize the orange without having to replace your floors!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

Overall, this space is great and has lots of potential! The first thing I notice is the orange floor and stair banister, so let’s talk about how we can neutralize those without putting in new flooring. The blue paint color is not doing any favors here, blue and orange are complimentary colors so it’s making the orange stand out even more. I would start by painting the walls a cool toned neutral color. Then I notice that the lighting in here is very warm, so I would swap the light bulbs with a daylight tone, roughly 3500 Kelvin. Tap here to read my guide on how to pick the right light bulb for your space.

With those simple updates you’ll notice the orange tone of the floors is a lot more neutral and less noticeable. To modernize this space, I would update the entry table and decor, add neutral wall art, and update the light fixtures. A large area rug adds a lot of color and texture and is also very practical to have at the entrance so there’s space to take your shoes off, etc. I love a subtle wallpaper. I think it adds so much character and texture to the space without being visually overwhelming.

DIY Idea- Picture Moulding

I think adding a picture moulding accent wall to the staircase makes the room feel grander and more modern. Picture moulding is an easy beginner DIY! All you need is trim, a nail gun, caulk, wood filler, and paint! They even make miter shears that make cutting the trim easier if you don’t have a miter saw. Don’t overthink it, you’ve got this!
