This week we’re talking about what to do with your awkward front room! These rooms are great, often featuring high ceilings and bay windows, but they can feel awkwardly placed and hard to design.

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

The best thing you can do for front rooms like this is to pick what you want it to be, and stick with it! Since these rooms are normally in a high traffic area like the entryway, they’re not the best option for multi-purpose rooms. I noticed that this person has their desk here, so I’m going to make it their home office.

The first thing I address in all of my designs is the windows, I love that they have their curtains hung high and wide, and trim around the windows. BUT, since this is a small room, I would remove the middle curtain panels so you can see the cove of the bay windows and it gives the room a little more depth.

Then, I would move the desk off the wall and make it a statement piece in the room. Extra seating is important, so I would add chairs and an ottoman to accommodate that and add some coziness to the space.

They have great decor in this space, I love the accent chair and large area rug! I always recommend adding plants to your space, and they have done that. I would only add a couple things to really make this space stand out and feel intentional. First, I would paint the walls a moody color and add picture moulding to give it a moody library vibe. The dark color helps close off the room from the rest of the house and helps it feel like a more dedicated space. Then I would personally change the decor style slightly away from modern farmhouse and lean more into the transitional modern style with rustic accents like wood tones, aged pottery, lampshades, and vintage artwork.

With these few simple changes, now this awkward front room feels like it was always meant to be a moody home office!
