Spruce My Space: How to Make a Small Living Room Feel Bigger

Sharing my favorite tips to help make any small space feel bigger!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

This style of living room is super common, the low ceilings and entryway make the room feel small and hard to design, so I’m going to share with you what mistakes to avoid and what I would do to make it feel bigger! First thing I notice is that there’s not a lot of depth going on in this room. I love beige, but there’s ways to incorporate it in your design so that it doesn’t feel like one beige blob. Painting the walls a different color than the trim and ceilings gives you that dimension, while still being neutral. The layout of the furniture in this room works well with the entryway, it’s important to leave space for guests to enter your home and have room to take off coat, shoes, etc.. I would definitely add an area rug, curtains, and throw pillows to make the room feel cozier by adding texture and color. The floors are really beautiful, so to highlight that I would incorporate the same wood tone in furniture throughout the room. Another thing that I think helps make the ceilings feel taller, is to hang your TV a little bit lower on the wall so your eye is drawn upwards.

DIY Idea

For a DIY project, I would build out a fireplace. This adds balance to the room, along with extra coziness from the fire. Building a fireplace may seem intimidating, but I promise it’s a lot easier than you would think! You just build a frame with 2X4s, add drywall, and finish it with paint, shiplap, or even lime wash! I linked a few of my blog posts below of the fireplace renos/builds that I’ve done before for you to reference. Building a fireplace would add so much warmth (literally and visually) to the space and make a beautiful statement. This room is begging for it!
