Spruce My Space: How to Design a Multi-Purpose Playroom

post featured image

This week I’m sharing how to transform your playroom into a multi-purpose room the whole family can hang out in!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

There’s so many great features about this room, the natural light, overall symmetry and balance, and arched opening give us a lot to work with! The first thing I would do is hang the curtains high and wide to make the back wall seem wider and taller. Then, I would paint the back wall a dark color to give the room some depth. Adding comfortable swivel chairs and a soft ottoman not only gives you extra seating, but having moveable furniture in a room like this is key to keeping it functional so your kids can move the ottoman to play or you can turn your chair to talk to the person next to you! When designing any space, it’s important to keep the visual weight balanced. We see a lot of visual weight on one side of the room with the storage cabinet, so to balance that out I added the chairs and a side table on the other side of the room. Same thing when I added a gallery wall above the cabinet, I also added a large art piece to the other wall to maintain balance. Then you want to focus on shape, the shape of this room is rectangular, and so is the window, area rug, storage cabinet, and artwork. To soften that and to compliment the arch opening, we want to add round shapes throughout the room like the lighting on the ceiling and wall, a circular ottoman, and spherical decor like the globe. If you wanted to stop here, you totally could! There’s plenty of great storage with the existing cabinet and little bookshelf on the wall. But if you wanted to take it one step further…

DIY Idea

I would DIY a built in cabinet for extra storage and added visual interest in this space! A built in cabinet would have lots of drawers to store toys and crafts, and the bookshelf on top could store extra books and you could even add baskets for additional hidden storage! The wood tone would add a ton of warmth to the space and tie together the wood tones from the picture frame, side table, ottoman, and bookshelf.
