Spruce My Space: How to Design a Timeless Nursery

If you have a nursery that feels boring, follow these tips to create a timeless design that will grow with your kids!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

The first thing I notice when we look at this room as a whole is the cool window. I love the character and light that the windows add to the room. The one mistake we’re making here is the curtains are covering up the windows. Instead of hanging the curtain rod across the window, I would recommend taking the curtain rod all the way up to the ceiling and hanging it wide so the curtain panels are outside the window frame. This makes the windows feel taller and grander, and with this room being a nursery, having curtains that fully block out the light is important.

I think some sort of accent wall would really make this room pop. I’m pulling the navy blue from the existing furniture here and making it the focal point of the room. The moody paint color makes the windows stand out even more and it tricks the eye into looking deeper into the room which makes the room feel bigger.

To tie everything together, I would update the ceiling fan with something more modern. Add gold wall sconces and pictures to the walls on either side of the windows. Update the rocking chair with something a little more modern, and turn the crib so that it’s more visually balanced with the dresser on the right side of the room. Adding rich textures with the area rug, vintage picture frames, and faux plant really gives this space a cozy, timeless feel.

With just a few cosmetic changes, this room feels like a totally different space! The thing I like most about this design is that it’s timeless. Once the child grows out of the crib, you can have a bed in here or maybe turn it into a guest room and you won’t have to change anything about the room aside from the furniture.
