Spruce My Space: How to Create a Moody Bedroom Without Feeling Heavy

post featured image

This person wanted their bedroom to feel like a resort-style relaxing oasis, so let’s talk about the things I would immediately change to achieve that!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

The first thing I notice is the outdated ceiling fan– it’s too bulky for the space and the upward light is casting a shadow and highlighting the textured ceiling. I would swap it out for a more modern and sleek ceiling fan with a downward light.

Next we need to address the curtains, they’re hung high enough but they need to be wider. We want the curtain panels to touch the edge of the window trim so it creates the illusion of a larger window. I think the patterned curtains they have draw attention from the view, so instead I would use a neutral, pleated curtain.

I love where their head was at with the matching dark furniture, but it’s making the room feel really heavy. I would swap out the furniture for something more neutral. Then to give the room a more luxurious, resort-style feel, I would do bigger sconces and wider nightstands.

The key to making a moody room feel visually balanced is to disperse the moody color throughout the room in small accents. We did a dark accent wall with board and batten and painted it Outerspace by Sherwin Williams. So to disperse that color throughout the room, I used blue velvet throw pillows on the bed and bench, then tied it all together with a large area rug with blue undertones. *Pro tip: always use 8×10 or larger size area rug for bedrooms. You want the rug to reach from the nightstands past the end of the bench at the foot of the bed.* Then to finish the space I added wood accents throughout the room and different textures with the blankets, pillows, and faux plants.

I love how this bedroom completely transformed with just a few cosmetic changes! Let me know what you think of this design in the comments on Instagram and follow along for weekly room transformations! You can shop the links for this space below or on my Amazon and LTK storefronts!
