This homeowner reached out and said she had she had recently purchased the Poppy Honeysuckle Small (Cream) wallpaper from my collection with Wall Blush. Her plan was to wallpaper the walls in the breakfast nook, but now she’s second guessing where the wallpaper should stop and if she should add board and batten.
The shape of this breakfast nook is very common– we have the same setup in our house, and I also struggled with where the wallpaper should start/stop. Try to imagine in your head where you want the space to visually expand, if we only wallpaper the walls behind the windows and door, that makes the space feel really tight. But then the question becomes, where should it end?
I would take the wallpaper into the corner on the left, and based on the cabinet placement on the right hand side of the before image, I would assume there is a wall to the right as well. Bringing the wallpaper past the windows and doors and into these corners helps make expand your sightline so now the space feels bigger!
Optionally, I would swap the dark table and chairs for a warmer wood table and a lighter black set of chairs, all placed on top of a textured area rug to help ground the space. Other pieces that would fill out the room include a hutch styled with great dishes and personal items, and some cozy stools on the other side to balance the layout. Finishing the room with greenery, fun wall décor, and a dark ceiling that plays beautifully off the wallpaper transforms this dated breakfast nook into a well-designed, inviting space.
