A two-story living room can be a great feature in a home, but it can also feel overwhelming. Add in an awkwardly placed fireplace, and the room becomes even more challenging. Since moving the fireplace wasn’t an option, I added a mantel surround and painted it to blend seamlessly into the new moody wall color. Because the fireplace wall is so large, the added molding helps break it up and creates visual interest. Carrying the moody mauve color into the foyer also helps visually connect the two spaces.
I love the floors, so I swapped out the area rug for one that contrasts with them and pulls in some of the moody mauve tones from the wall. For the space next to the fireplace, I chose a tall hutch to create visual balance with the front door and foyer. Tall curtains emphasize the room’s height while adding softness and texture. Given the scale of the space, a modern chandelier works beautifully.
To finish the room, I added an ottoman in a warm leather tone, greenery, and other personal touches. What was once a bare living space now feels stylish, cozy, and inviting.
