Spruce My Space: Small Family Room Update

This person reached out to because they felt like the room feels really small and they want it to feel bigger without losing the functionality of the space.

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

When you’re working with a smaller space, the goal is to make it feel larger—and we can do that by leaning into the coziness. With the right pieces and color palette, you can create a room that feels warm, inviting, and perfect for family time.

The existing wood beam already adds great character, and by introducing two more beams and a darker, moodier wall color, the space instantly feels more intimate. Replacing the white blinds with a fabric shade and updating the ceiling fan ties everything together for a polished, cohesive look.

I’m always a fan of a good sectional—it’s the ultimate piece for gathering. Swapping the dark one for a lighter option brightens the room, while a rug helps anchor the space and tie together the color palette. I’d also trade the vertical blinds on the sliding door for neutral curtains that compliment the new wall color.

Finally, a touch of greenery, a few personal accents, and the warm glow of wall sconces complete the transformation—turning this small family room into a cozy retreat everyone will love.
