This follower reached out to me to help her design her home office, she wanted to be able to include a desk, vanity, and pull-out couch for guests, but wasn’t sure how to make it work in such a small space. She mentioned she found a cute pink mirror she wanted to base the room around and I immediately had a vision for how I wanted this space to look! A common misconception is that in order to have a fun and vibrant space, you have to paint the walls. You absolutely do not! Adding different textures and pops of color will give you the fun vibe you’re going for without having to repaint. The first thing I added this fluffy checkered area rug that adds a lot of texture to the space, but still compliments the white walls and grey floors. The key to designing a well balanced room is to add a lot of texture with neutral colored items and then have a few bright colored pieces that really pop. I added different textures in this room with the patterned rug, tufted couch, velvet ottoman, plants, and pops of gold in the office chair and vanity stool all while keeping a very neutral color palette. This makes the room visually interesting without drawing focus away from the pops of color.
Furniture placement in a room like this with a narrow entryway and large window can be tricky. You want to try to keep as much of the furniture facing the window as possible, and also keep in mind the path of travel through the room. You don’t want to block the entryway or light from the window with bulky furniture, which is why I opted to put the couch on the wall to the right of the doorway. I added the vanity next to the window so she’ll have a lot of natural light while she gets ready. And I placed the desk along the wall with the window so she can look at her gorgeous view while she works and also has plenty of natural light for Zoom meetings! I played with a lot of different layouts for this room and ultimately decided this was the best option that felt open while still being functional.
