Spruce My Space: How to Decorate Tall, Empty Walls

So many people struggle to decorate their two-story living rooms, but with a few simple changes and the power of paint we can elevate the space on a budget!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

Two-story living rooms are an incredible feature—but let’s be honest, they can also feel a little overwhelming. When everything is the same color and scale, the space can fall flat, even with beautiful architecture.

When I first looked at this room, that’s exactly what I saw—great bones, but everything blended together except the furniture. So let’s break down how a few intentional design choices can completely transform a two-story living room.

Refreshing a Dated Fireplace with Color and Texture

Let’s start with the fireplace. It’s a major focal point, but in this case, it felt dated and a bit lost in the space.

To update it, I smoothed out the surface and gave it a fresh coat of Sherwin-Williams Pewter Green, a rich, moody color that instantly adds depth. Then I added a thick wood mantle to bring in warmth and contrast.

Now, instead of blending in, the fireplace stands out as a true feature—and anchors the entire room.

Elevating Floor-to-Ceiling Windows

On the other side of the room, we have stunning floor-to-ceiling windows—another amazing feature that just needed a little love.

The first change? Swapping out the dated blinds for fabric Roman shades. This simple update adds softness and texture. Pairing those with floor-to-ceiling curtains instantly elevates the entire window wall and helps balance the scale of the room.

Adding Interest Without Overwhelming the Space

With two strong focal points—the fireplace and the windows—I didn’t want the back wall competing for attention.

Instead, I added molding to the center wall to introduce subtle architectural detail without overwhelming the space. A framed TV and wall sconces bring in that custom, elevated feel while still keeping things cohesive.

For the wall color, I chose a neutral greige that coordinates beautifully with the green fireplace, creating a calm and balanced palette throughout the room.

Choosing the Right Furniture for a Large Living Room

Furniture layout is key in a two-story living room. The original leather pieces felt a bit disconnected, so I swapped them for a sectional that better fits the scale of the space, along with a fun accent chair for personality.

A large area rug helps ground the room—especially important in a space with high ceilings—and breaks up the flooring to create a more defined, cozy seating area.

Finishing Touches That Bring It All Together

To complete the space, I layered in warm wood accents, greenery, and personal touches. These details are what take a room from styled to lived-in and inviting.

The transformation really is night and day. What was once a bland, oversized living room now feels intentional, balanced, and full of character—a space that truly invites you to sit down and stay awhile.
