At first glance, this patio has definitely seen better days. The bones are there, but it needs warmth, texture, and a few intentional upgrades to transform the space into something inviting and functional.
The first change I would make is replacing the broken concrete with travertine pavers. Travertine is a great choice for outdoor patios because it holds up well in the elements while instantly adding warmth and texture. Instead of feeling flat and cold, the patio now feels layered and intentional—more like an outdoor living space.
Privacy is always important when creating a relaxing backyard retreat. Installing a black privacy fence helps define the space while also giving a beautiful backdrop for landscaping.
Against the dark fence, flower beds and greenery really pop, adding color and softness that helps balance the harder materials like stone and wood.
The wood tones of the gazebo create a really nice contrast against the black fence while also providing much-needed shade for the outdoor dining area.
This gazebo also has electrical hookups, which opens the door for a fun design detail—adding a statement pendant light above the dining table. Lighting like this makes the space feel more intentional and allows the patio to be enjoyed long after the sun goes down.
A fire pit is a must in my opinion. Not only does it create great ambiance, but it also makes the patio usable during cooler evenings (and of course, perfect for making s’mores).
Around the fire pit, I added Adirondack chairs, a sofa, and a pouf ottoman. Mixing seating styles gives the space flexibility and makes it easier to host family and friends comfortably.
The finishing touches are what really make this backyard feel like a retreat. String lights add warmth and charm in the evenings, while planters bring in greenery and life.
And one of my favorite additions—the adorable sandbox—makes the space just as enjoyable for kids as it is for adults.
What was once an uninspired patio is now a welcoming backyard retreat that can be enjoyed for much of the year.
