Step 1: Choose Comfortable Furniture

Start with the basics: comfy furniture. A nice outdoor sofa or a couple of chairs can make all the difference. I’ve spotted some great pieces at Walmart and Target that are both stylish and budget-friendly. Opt for furniture that invites you to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Think about adding a hammock or a cute swing; they offer a fun and relaxing way to spend your afternoons and the kids love them! I added a few of my favorite affordable pieces below.

Step 2: Add Color with Pillows and Rugs

Next up, let’s add some pops of color. As much as I love neutral furniture and spaces, you can have fun with your outdoor space and add some fun pillows, or a cute stylish rug. Pick patterns and colors that reflect the style you are looking for! Whether it is a fun black striped pillow or a cute floral patterned rug -it’s an easy way to liven up your space. These are also easy to switch out whenever you feel like a change. Mix and match textures and sizes, or keep it uniform for a more cohesive appearance. Totally up to you, and the look you are trying to achieve! Remember, these can change with your mood or the season, so have fun with it!

Step 3: Set Up Some Outdoor Lighting

Good lighting can keep your patio warm and welcoming even after the sun sets. Simple string lights or a couple of lanterns can add a fun glow to your outdoor evenings! Plus, they make everything look better with just a flip of a switch! For an easy DIY project, try wrapping string lights around trees or in glass jars- this is my fav; involve your kids in it too- they will love it! There are so many options when it comes to lights, the decision is up to you!

Step 4: Green It Up with Plants

Plants always make a space feel more alive and add a pop of color to a more neutral space. Add a few potted or faux plants around your patio for a refreshing touch. If you’re into gardening, why not try some herbs or flowers that can thrive outdoors? Consider incorporating an herb garden in small containers, which can be both decorative and functional for those summer barbecues- plus they are easy to grow! AJ and I will be using the herb starter kit I tagged below for you for a fun, easy weekend project that will look so cute on our windowsill!

Step 5: Create a Cozy Firepit Area

Is there anything better than gathering around a firepit with your loved ones on a cool summer night? Last weekend, TJ and I set up a firepit area in our backyard, and it’s quickly become our favorite spot! Choose a firepit that fits your space and style—whether it’s a rustic stone design or a sleek metal model. Surround it with some comfy outdoor seating, and you’ve got the perfect spot. Our boys, love reading books or telling stories and making s’mores out there. It’s moments like these that make all the DIY effort worth it!

Step 6: Enjoy Outdoor Dining and Games

Summer is for making memories, and what better way to do that than by eating outside? We have a dining set that we absolutely love, right on our deck. It’s perfect for everything from morning breakfasts to family dinners. And when the meal is done, we clear the table for family game night! This is a new tradition we just started doing, it’s been so great for AJ! Our latest favorite is a giant outdoor Jenga set that TJ and I DIY’d together—you should see the concentration on AJ’s face when he pulls the right block! Soon Jordan will be playing alongside him, I can’t wait for more memories out on our patio.

With your deck or patio set up like this, summer days and nights at home can feel like a vacation. Enjoy the process and the beautiful outcome of your decorating efforts, and remember, these spaces are meant to be lived in and loved.
