I get a lot of DMs on Instagram with people asking for decor advice for their home. Sometimes you get stumped and just want a second pair of eyes on your space! I thought it would be fun to launch a segment called Spruce My Space where I let you submit photos of your home and every Friday I will randomly select some and share my thoughts with you all on my Instagram stories. I am sure a lot of you have similar set ups in your home so by watching my design suggestions, it might spark ideas for you in your own homes!
This person was wanting to know what to do with this fireplace. I think this is a case where less can be more! I love the style of the fireplace, the place for the logs and I love the lamp and planter that she chose. I would add onto those black accents by adding a few things. I would take her grouping on the left and move it to the right corner. By adding height back there will open up the space a bit. I would add a rope basket to hide the toys and cozy up the brick, add some metal lanterns to play off the other black accents, add some black candlesticks and do an assortment of frames. You could also add some garland to add in some color!
I think this space is off to a great start! I love the focal point on the wall. I would get a bigger piece of furniture to put below it. You need something that carries a bigger visual weight. I suggest a sideboard like this one below. You can add some decor to the top using vases and florals to bring some color. For the walls, I would do matching floating shelves on each side and add some decor. I would either DIY the fan where you paint the base black and use antiquing wax on the blades OR I would swap it for a new fan. They are pretty inexpensive.
I think you could really modernize this space and make it feel larger by painting it repose gray. Here is what I would do:
