Spruce My Space: How to Update Your 90s Bathroom

post featured image

Designing small bathrooms like this can be tricky, so I’m going to show you a couple different ways you can easily update the space on a budget!

Before & After: Virtual Rendering

We’ve all seen it– the dreaded half bath that no one ever knows what to do with. It’s really hard in small spaces like this because we don’t have a lot of room to work with so you don’t want to add too much so it feels cluttered, but you also want it to be packed full of charm and character. I came up with two options– one where we swap out the flooring and do a board and batten accent wall and then another option where we keep the existing flooring and use wallpaper to tie it all together.

Option 1: Update the Flooring

This would be my first choice for this bathroom, I think that it’s so classic and timeless. We swapped out the vanity and added a marble tile flooring to make it feel more modern and refreshed. The white marble makes it feel so much more elevated. I think that by doing some sort of board and batten wall treatment or any sort of wall trim is an easy way to add visual interest and charm to the space. For paint, I would choose a creamy mushroom color, like Mega Greige by Sherwin Williams, to add richness and depth without being too overwhelming. I would swap out the light fixture for something more modern that ties together the black elements on the vanity with the gold mirror. Then to finish the space I would keep decor very simple because it’s such a small space and with the wall trim there’s a lot of visual interest already.

Option 2: Keep the Original Tile

I actually think that the existing tile floor is very pretty, it’s just blue so that’s what makes it a little bit tricky, but I think if you paired it with a wallpaper that has blue undertones in the pattern it would tie the room together seamlessly. I chose a lighter paint color, like Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams, and light gray bathmat because the floors and wallpaper are very moody so adding those brighter elements makes the space feel less dark. I would still choose the same vanity, mirror, light fixture, and decor but with the wallpaper and half wall board and batten it feels like a completely different space!
